Overwhelming take-up of virtual training sessions for health care professionals dealing with baby death during Covid 19 https://bereavementtraining.com/overwhelming-take-up-of-virtual-training-sessions-for-health-care-professionals-dealing-with-baby-death-during-covid-19/ Wed, 22 Sep 2021 11:06:48 +0000 https://bereavementtraining.com/?p=1811

When a baby dies it is a tragedy at any time, but during the current pandemic, bereaved families and the professionals supporting them, have been faced with additional and often distressing challenges. Restrictions around visiting has made access to hospitals difficult for partners and other family members, while support services that would normally be provided for bereaved parents, have been unavailable or severely limited.

Witnessing and coping with this impact on families has been very difficult for professionals.  Doctors, nurses and midwives have been telling us about the impact covid-19 is having on them. PPE equipment has removed the personal touch quite literally. Face masks and visors limit the effect of facial expressions and muffle voices and the natural instinct of being tactile with mothers and babies has been denied to them.

Professionals need access to specialised bereavement training and support now more than ever. In normal times many of them are able to access face to face training, but during the pandemic something else was urgently needed. Recognising this need, baby loss charity, Abigail’s Footsteps has launched a series of virtual baby loss training sessions. These 2 hour sessions are fully funded by the charity and provided by Paula Abramson of Bereavement Training International (BTI).

Bereavement Training International ….One Year On! https://bereavementtraining.com/bereavement-training-international-one-year-on/ Fri, 25 Sep 2020 12:52:55 +0000 https://bereavementtraining.com/?p=1868 As Bereavement Training International approaches its first anniversary, we have been looking back at some of the achievements of our first year. While nobody could have predicted the challenges we would all face in 2020, it has been a privilege to continue to provide specialist training and consultancy services to professionals from across the UK and beyond. We have delivered bespoke training to professionals working in NHS Trusts, Children’s Hospices and various charities, including, The Twins Trust, The Lullaby Trust and TinyLife Charity. Since June, all our training has been delivered virtually, allowing us to reach out to so many people in a way that makes the training both accessible and easy to fit into busy schedules.

Providing high-quality support and care for families following a pregnancy loss or the death of a baby or child is an important element of the role of professionals. To help ensure that all families receive the best possible care it is essential that staff have access to good quality training.

In partnership with Abigail’s Footsteps charity We have been delivering fully funded two hour baby loss virtual training sessions on a weekly basis since June.  We are so grateful to this amazing charity and have been overwhelmed by the demand for this training and the fantastic feedback we have received.

More recently we have formed a partnership with The Lily Mae Foundation, providing fully funded baby loss training sessions for professionals in the West Midlands.

In March, just before lockdown, we delivered a pilot training session designed for counsellors working with parents following a pregnancy loss or death of a baby. We are delighted to be working in partnership with Petals charity to design and deliver this specialist training and are looking forward to delivering our first virtual session in November.

Earlier this year, our founder and principal, Paula Abramson was delighted to be invited  to become an Ambassador for Abigail’s Footsteps charity.  She has also been asked to become a specialist advisor for the neonatal charity, The Kit Tarka Foundation. Paula continues to be an active member of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Baby Loss and a member of the advisory panel for the Pan London Lead Nurse for Neonatal Palliative Care role.

Paula has guest presented at various events including the Children’s Funeral Charity Annual Conference, the National Bereavement Alliance webinar, the London Neonatal Network Study Day, and in November, Paula has been invited to talk at the Institute of Health Visitors Neonatal Ambassador training session.

Paula has also co-authored a chapter in the ‘Neonatal Palliative Care for Nurses’ textbook and has had two articles published in the British Journal of Midwifery.

Our training is designed for all professionals who provide care for parents when a baby or child dies, including midwives and student midwives, obstetricians, neonatal, paediatric and gynaecology staff, sonographers, GPs and other primary care providers, health visitors, counsellors and chaplains.

Our professional facilitators, with many years of experience, can provide our bespoke bereavement training to you and your staff at your place of work or deliver the training online.

We are looking forward to working with our existing and new clients in the coming year.

Report on latest All-Party Parliamentary Group on Baby Loss https://bereavementtraining.com/report-on-latest-all-party-parliamentary-group-on-baby-loss/ Thu, 31 Oct 2019 12:17:13 +0000 https://bereavementtraining.com/?p=1681 The quarterly meeting of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Baby Loss took place in the Palace of Westminster on 28th October. The meeting, chaired by MP Antoinette Sandbach, included an overview of this years’ Baby Loss Awareness Week, as well as an update from the National Bereavement Care Pathway, and a synopsis of the Centre for Mental Health’s report for Petals ‘Life after Loss’. https://petalscharity.org/lifeafterloss/

Latest stats from the ONS suggest a slight decrease in numbers of stillbirths & neonatal deaths in England – to reach the government’s target to halve the rate of stillbirths and neonatal deaths by 2025, we need to reduce this further; from 4.0(2018) to 2.6 per 1000 births for stillbirths and from 2.8(2018) to 1.5 per 1000 for neonatal deaths.

Recommendations from the 2019 BLAW Alliance Report: ‘Governments and the NHS must ensure that any parent who has suffered pregnancy or baby loss and needs high-quality specialist psychological support can access it free of charge, at a time and place that is right for them, wherever they live in the UK’  Out of Sight, Out of Mind: Bereaved parents falling through the gaps in mental health care

The National Bereavement Care Pathway (NBCP) was launched in 2017 and has been piloted in 32 NHS Trusts in England. It was established to ensure bereaved parents and their families are supported in the best way possible. There are now 45 NHS sites across England actively using the Pathway, with another 70+ sites expressing interest in adopting it https://www.sands.org.uk/about-sands/media-centre/news/2019/05/national-bereavement-care-pathway-helps-improve-care-received

Earlier this month, the International Stillbirth Alliance held its’ Annual Conference in Madrid and reported that globally, each day 14,000 babies are stillborn or die during the neonatal period. Some good news is that the UK seem to be leading the way in bereavement care for parents, with many countries struggling to provide support. However, more work needs to be done in the UK for staff support and access to high-quality training.

The APPG meeting concluded with Clea Harmer, CEO of SANDS, presenting an overview of BLAW 2019. In the last ten years, the BLAW alliance has grown from 17 – 89 members. There were more than 265 buildings across the country lit up in pink and blue, the ‘wave of light’ trended on twitter and there was more press and media coverage than ever before

World Prematurity Day 2019 https://bereavementtraining.com/world-prematurity-day-2019/ Wed, 30 Oct 2019 14:34:53 +0000 https://bereavementtraining.com/?p=1689 World Prematurity Day takes place on 17 November 2019. It is a global movement to raise awareness about the challenges babies and parents often face, following a premature birth and the devastating impact it can have on families.

Whilst we know that nothing can prepare parents for how it feels to have a baby in neonatal care, we do know that having compassionate family centred care can make a difference, and can help families through this very difficult and often challenging time.

Bereavement Training International, can provide bespoke training for your neonatal team, to help you provide high quality support to parents, families and staff www.bereavementtraining.com
